Library: Success!

NUS Awards 2009-RUSU Campaign of the Year Runner Up:

RUSU was Runner Up for the Campaign of the Year award in this year's NUS Awards for its Library Campaign. RUSU was nominated out of 24 Universities for achieving a better library with improved services, accessibility and facilities. The campaign objectives were achieved with the University committing to meet all of the Union demands.

You Said:

At the beginning of the year students contacted RUSU the most about the University Library facilities saying that they did not meet your needs and it was an issue that you felt passionate about.

We Did:

Two of last year's Student Officers, Rhiannon Horsley, RUSU President and Vicky Clarke, VP Education listened to your comments and have been working hard on the library campaign this year. It was also something they both promised to do in their manifestos. Through campaigning and working with the University, RUSU has made sure that the library meets your needs.

Campaign Success:

This year RUSU has secured:

  • Longer opening hours at the evening AND the weekend
  • More study space during the exam period
  • More plug sockets throughout the library
  • Increase in spending on books

This term you saw additional study space around campus. Teaching rooms were turned into study rooms. These rooms appeared all over campus and there was space for silent, quiet and group study.

Obviously not all changes can happen over night, but RUSU has had reassurances from the Vice Chancellor himself that these will be spending priorities for the Library and the University. These changes will be happening as soon as is possible.
