Nestlé Boycott

Last term a motion was submitted to Student Voice to ban Nestlé products from RUSU. On the 22nd January 2008 Student Voice held a debate to listen to the arguments for and against the issues behind the idea of the ban. This was followed by a unanomous vote in favour of boycotting Nestlé.

This motion was sent to the RUSU Trustee Board on the 12th March 2008 to be checked for any financial and legal implications and has now been confirmed as RUSU policy.

The Final Motion

The Union Notes;

  • That every 30 seconds a baby dies from unsafe bottle feeding
  • That Nestlé is breaking the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes
  • That Nestlé needs to acknowledge the International Code and change its policies and practice

The Union Believes;

  • That Nestlé's practices are unethical
  • The only way to get them to change their actions is to boycott the company

The Union Resolves;

  • To stop ordering and stocking Nestlé products
  • To review RUSU's boycott of Nestlé once a year at Student Voice
  • To educate RUSU members on the issues surrounding the Nestlé boycott
  • To lobby the University to support the Nestlé boycott across campus
