Manifesto

I'm an English and Philosophy student from Brighton. I've been on the Amnesty Committee since 2006, and involved with Campaigns Forum throughout University; co-ordinating 'Trade Justice' and 'Student Action for Refugees'. Last year I was Co-President of the Jewish Society. My University experience has encouraged me to support human rights and appreciate Reading's diverse community.

If elected I'll ensure all students are represented and have a chance to make the most of their University experience.

Know Your Rights!

Many of us aren't fully aware of our rights and can find ourselves treated unfairly. To tackle this I'll focus on understanding and protecting various rights, including:

Housing, employment, consumer, political and equal rights

Mental Health Awareness

Mental Health problems are often stigmatised, despite affecting 1 in 4 people, and students can be vulnerable. I'll raise awareness of mental health problems and improve support by:

Creating an online student support forum; greater awareness of counselling services; reintroducing Nightline; tackling 'Uni Blues'.

Celebrating Diversity

Reading has a diverse student population with numerous thriving societies, sports clubs, representation groups and JCRs; I want to make the most of this through:

  • joint events and taster sessions
  • ensuring student activities are more accessible to all students, eg. supporting the deaf community; greater presence on Bulmershe
  • recognition of different cultural, religious and international events
  • a forum for religious groups
  • better catering for dietary requirements
  • improving childcare facilities

Not forgetting...

  • Safer student areas
  • Solidarity with worldwide human rights struggles

Three Main Points

  • Know Your Rights! Fighting injustice by understanding our housing, consumer, employment, political and equal rights
  • Mental Health Awareness: Tackling stigma through awareness and improved support
  • Celebrating Diversity: ensuring student activities are accessible to all; encouraging joint events & taster sessions; recognition of different cultural, international and religious events
