The English Society has grown over the past few years to become one of the most popular union societies, organising large-scale events ranging from our Christmas social in 2007 "Snowed-In" (organised with the French and International Student societies), which won event of the year at the Societies and Volunteers awards, to the Globe Theatre trip in 2008 which saw members from all walks of academia attend a guided tour of the theatre and its museum.
The English Society aims to integrate not only English degree students but also those who take an interest in the cultural aspects of the society such as regular socials to comedy nights, night clubs, theatre visits and screenings of course-relevant films. Furthermore we will continue to organise poetry recitals from renowned individuals such as Professor Peter Robinson.
If you are looking to have a good time amongst friendly individuals then the English Society is for you. Whether you like to have socials in clubs in Reading town, have workshops headed by directors from the globe theatre, or attend screenings or comedy nights then we can cater for all your needs. We plan to make the year 2008/9 even more fun than the year before, aiming to succeed in satisfying everybody's needs from a University society.
Come and see us at the Freshers' Fair if you would like to join!
Best Regards,
Mike George
President of English Society
