Aikido
Reading University Aikido Club 1969-2009 Celebrating 40 years of excellence in the martial arts
|
| |
Aikido is a Japanese martial art which is based around principles of self-defence; comprising immobilisation, throws and weapons work. It exists as an effective and very unique martial way that emphasises non-aggression, non-confrontation and non-competitiveness.
What this does for you
Aikido uses very little personal strength and so is ideal for almost anyone, but also offers the opportunity for improved strength, flexibility and fitness. Students are taught to take falls and receive technique safely, and also how to apply pins and attacks of their own. The weapons work largely takes the form of a bokken and jo (wooden sword and staff respectively), which complement the correct body movements and responses that are so crucial in Aikido. Practitioners will thus develop greater awareness, reactions, co-ordination and self-confidence, as well as an efficient use of strength and movement.

The Club
Beginners are welcome throughout the year and will be taught by Sensei Thackeray, a 5th Dan, and Tricia Matthews, a 3rd Dan. The RUSU club is affiliated with the Whiteoak club in Reading, and also with the Institute of Aikido; a founding member of the British Aikido board. As such there are courses available with other clubs throughout the year, including an annual Summer School and Springtime weapons camp. The club is an integral part of a community that has been running in Reading since 1969 and whose members, over the years, have spread throughout the world.
Being a social group we also organise regular social events and visits to the pub after practice, allowing members to get to know one another and fully enjoy becoming a part of this community.
