StARs (Student Academic Representatives) are the first line of student representation within the University. Most courses will have at least one representative who is responsible for ensuring your views are listened to by your department or school. These views can be anything to do with your experience within your school or department including your teaching and learning experience, the availability of resources such as in the library and laboratories and the pastoral support from personal tutors.
StARs have a number of ways in which they can deal with your feedback. Firstly, yours views can be raised as issues at the regular department/school level Staff-Student Liaison Committees. There are staff representatives on these committees who help work out the best ways to resolve issues that have been highlighted.
Secondly, StARs can raise issues and offer feedback to Education Reps. There are two elected Education Reps in each of the four faculties within the University. Education Reps are able to deal with issues and provide feedback in faculty level meetings. More details about Education Reps.
Finally, StARs always have the support of the Students' Union, in particular the Vice President Education. This ensures that issues from right across the University can fed into the Students' Union and raised at University-wide meetings.
The Students' Union provides induction and ongoing support sessions for StARs. This is a great opportunity for StARs to meet other academic reps, as well as Students' Union support staff and elected officers.
StARs usually start their roles around October of each year. However, you can volunteer at any point during the academic year. If you are interested in becoming a StAR, either;
