Whether this is attending meetings, speaking with the media, organising rallies or simply making sure that Union events are tailored to your needs, this organisation works for you every day. But it is only through your understanding, support and participation that we are able to make your University experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. The Sabbatical team have all been students here and we hope that you will feel happy and confidant to come and speak to us about any part of University life; from course problems and financial worries to fundraising and socialising. We have a vibrant staff team who are here to help you develop you through University and are based in the brand spanking new, �1.75 million Hub. All of the Sabbatical team can be found upstairs, and we are here to represent you- so never feel that your issues are unimportant, we are here to help!
Everyone has different expectations and aspirations for their time at University so at RUSU we offer a wide range of activities that you can tailor to your own needs. We offer great volunteering opportunities, campaigning and representation skills, varied sports clubs, a huge array of societies and you can even work at The Union (as I did) as a member of our student staff. University is the ultimate platform to get involved with activities that you have always wanted. We want you to leave University boasting of a great Union experience as well as a great degree. You are some of the brightest people in Britain today and I really think our eclectic mix of opportunities reflects the fact that we want you all to be challenged and satisfied academically, socially and physically.
I hope this handbook gives just a glimpse into the events and groups the Union provides. Often the assumption is made that a Student Union is just a bar- but RUSU is so much more than that! Yes, we offer a huge range of awesome social events but we also have the staff and provisions to make sure that you do not get overwhelmed by University. Being away from home is hard, as is budgeting and making a whole new network of friends. I genuinely believe our Union offers the perfect balance of support groups and events to guarantee that you will all regard your time at Reading University as one of the highlights of your entire life!
The Students' Union is brilliant, but only through your participation and commitment can we continue to be regarded as one of the best Students' Unions in the country. The more active and involved you are, the better the Students' Union can become.
All these opportunities will have such a positive impact on your time here and I advise you to absorb as much as you can because the time really does fly by. University is not just about getting a degree; it's a whole life changing experience. You get to meet hundreds of people from around the UK and the world and you will make friends with people who you will know for the rest of your life.
University really is the first major step in sculpting out the future you want and so I wish you luck and the very best for this academic year and don't forget to come and see us in The Hub!
