VP Student Rights and Diversity

Megan Pennyfather

Heya! I'm Megan and I am a 2009 graduate of Theatre Arts, Education and Deaf Studies.

I am now one of the five amazing student officers within the Students' Union. I have a lovely
office which is situated above the Hub. Feel free to come and visit me. My official role is Vice
President of Student Rights and Diversity. 'Student Rights' means I will listen and work with
you to make sure you're voice is heard on matters that affect you. The Diversity part of my
job means I am here to represent everybody and that includes you!

I aim to make student life at the University of Reading, inclusive, accessible and equal for
everyone. I oversee the Liberation and Representation groups- typically under-represented
groups. These are:

  • Students with Disabilities (SWD)
  • Women's Campaign
  • Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME)
  • International Students at Reading University (ISRU)
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual Liberation group (LGBT)
  • Mature Students Representation Group (MSRG)
  • Postgraduate Students Representation Group (PGRG)
  • Bulmershe Representation Group

More information on these groups can be found on page 46. They will also have stalls at the
Freshers' Fayre where you will be able to meet some of the members face-to-face.

I am also here to keep an eye on your welfare during your time in the Halls of Residence.
There are fantastic Welfare reps within your JCR's who are there to support you. This could
be with issues within your corridor, with your course, car parking or anything else. They also
provide a friendly face when you need one. They are there to help and point you in the right
direction. RUSU also runs a great welfare team to help all students.

As well as supporting all these diverse groups and people, I am hoping to spend a week this
year bringing everyone together by having a 'Be Unique Week'. This will give an opportunity
for all the groups to celebrate who they are. I also want to look at the support we can give
each other to remain happy whilst at University, so I will be holding Mental Health Awareness
events throughout the year.

If you are interested in getting involved in any of the Liberation or Representation groups or
have any questions, feel free to contact me or come and find me. I am also qualified in Level
2 British Sign Language, so if you are a deaf student and want to talk to or get involved,
please don't hesitate to pay me a visit!

Election Manifesto

I love being unique and I want us all to CELEBRATE in our differences and be PROUD to be
who we are! I want to explore having a Ôbe unique weekÕ which will give opportunity to
liberation groups such as LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), BAME (Black,
Asian and ethnic minority), SWD (Students with Disabilities), WomenÕs Lib and many others
to speak up and be heard through different creative outlets.

I want to focus in on Student Health and our current healthcare system. I think itÕs very
inappropriate for people living on Bulmershe have to walk about 50 minutes to get to the
University Medical Practice when they are feeling unwell.

I believe that Mental Health is completely misunderstood in a lot of areas in the University
among students and staff alike. I want to make people aware of the dangers when suffering
from mental health and highlight the difficulties one can find and the help thatÕs available. I
don't want students suffering from this to be left fighting alone anymore.

Finally I want to continue current projects that allow your voice to be heard such as; speak up
and student feedback forum. Overall I want to make your University experience a happy one!
