The Reading University Philosophy Society aims to encourage the discussion of philosophy amongst the lecturers and students of the university. The society welcomes people from all disciplines and is not purely for those studying Philosophy at the university.
Each year we organise a combination of socials and fortnightly talks from outside speakers, we are also hoping to organise some undergraduate debates this year. Last year our socials included meeting in the pub, going for dinner and wine and cheese evenings.
The fortnightly talks occur in the autumn and winter terms and cover a wide range of subjects. The format is usually a lecture followed by a discussion. After the presentation we tend to head to the local pub or restaurant to discuss the topic and also to socialise informally. Some previous topics have included religion, Nietzsche, authoring beliefs, torture, science and philosophy, Hume and Wittgenstein.
As well as the talks and socials during the year, there is also a philosophy weekend in the summer term after the exams. This involves heading off to stay at a youth hostel in Salisbury for a few days. A topic will be chosen for the weekend and then presented by several students, after discussion of the topic there is usually a division of the group as some of us venture off on a walk and the rest decide to play pool and socialise in the pub. The Saturday has in the past involved exploring Salisbury and the cathedral, taking a trip to Stonehenge and having a bit of a rest after staying up till 6 in the morning chatting round the camp fire.
