Changes in circumstances that could affect your finances:
Parental separation, divorce, family death, estrangement, illness, injury, marriage / cohabiting, pregnancy, birth of a child, change to a different course, suspension from university, change in immigration status.
If you are an undergraduate recieving a UK student loan and your household income reduces by more than 15% you should contact your Local Authority or Student Finance England on 0845 300 5090, and ask for a reassessment. You may now be entitled additional grants or bursaries.
If you suspend from University and you recieve UK student loan / grants / University Bursary, these may stop until your studies recommence. You should contact Student Services in the Carrington Building to discuss this further. You may be entitled to welfare benefits - contact Student Advice for assistance.
Illness or injury may result in entitlement to welfare benefits and/or Access to Learning Fund / Hardship Fund assistance.
Pregnancy does not change student loan or welfare benefit entitlement. However, if you are from the UK / EU you may be able to claim a pregnancy grant of £190. Consider applying to Access to Learning Fund / Hardship Funds
If you are from the UK/EU The birth of a child will change your finances.
Death in the family may mean that you have extra financial committments. In this situation consider applying to Access to Learning Fund / Hardship Funds.
If you become Estranged from your parents you may be entitled to reassessment for student loan as an independant student (this means their income will not be taken into account). Estrangement will need to be proved by letter from Dr / Solicitor / Social Services.
Changing to a different course may affect your entitlement to student loans. Seek advice if unsure.
If you marry or enter a civil partnership while at university you will be classed as 'independant' for Student Loan entitlement, the following academic year. Your partners income will be assessed
If you co-habit and are over 25 you will be classed as 'independant' for Student Loan entitlement the following year. Your partners income will be assessed. If you co-habit and are under 25 your entitlement will still be based on your parental family income.
