Our Service Aims

The Student Advice Service aims to meet the ever-changing and diverse needs of the student community.  We see students in one-to-one advice sessions, workshops, through our outreach work and other developmental activities.

We aim to welcome you to a relaxed, informal and friendly environment and you can expect the following from our service to you.

Independent

The Student Advisors are permanent members of staff who are employed by the Students' Union, not Reading University.  We can offer advice and support on University matters and this will not be shared with University staff without your consent.

Confidential

Your meeting with a Student Advisor is confidential.  We will not tell anyone that you have seen a Student Advisor or the nature of your problem, without your consent.  This includes University staff, your family and friends.  Only the Student Advice team have access to this information.  Please ask to see our Confidentiality Policy if you have any concerns regarding this aspect of our service.

Non-judgmental

The Student Advisors are not here to lecture you, tell you how to live your life or what to do.  We aim to give you information to enable you to make an informed decision.

Non-discriminatory

The Student Advisors will not discriminate against anyone who uses our service.  We can provide information and advice over the telephone, in person or via email.  More in-depth advice may require an appointment with a Student Advisor.

Free

Our service is provided free of charge.

Up to date advice

We receive training on a variety of issues which effect students and we are here to help you.  We can help you with any queries, questions or problems you may encounter whilst you are studying at Reading University.  If we are unable or unqualified to offer you the advice you need, we are able to refer you to an appropriate person or organisation that will be able to help you.

Our Mission Statement

We aim to ensure that all students are fully aware of their rights and responsibilities, so that they can make the most of their time at University.

We will provide accurate and relevant information to enable students to make informed decisions on issues affecting them.

We will provide advice, support and representation, as appropriate, to assist students in resolving problems.

We will monitor issues on which we can take positive initiatives to benefit students.

We will ensure that our service achieves the highest possible standards and meets the particular needs of international, mature and postgraduate students.
