This is one of the most common reasons people have their deposit taken! Where the property has not been left in a clean state, professional cleaning charges can run to hundreds of pounds, particularly for large properties. Here is a checklist of what to clean in your property:

  • Clean the cooker – oven, shelves, trays, hobs and extractor fan.
  • Fridge/Freezer – empty, clean shelves, defrost freezer, switch off and leave the doors open.
  • Cupboards – empty, clean inside and shelves.
  • Sinks/baths/showers/toilets – wipe clean, ensure hair/soap residue is removed from plugs, remove any limescale and check water is flowing freely. Change shower head if necessary.
  • Vacuum all communal areas and bedrooms.
  • Try to remove stains from carpets, floors, walls and skirting boards.
  • Remove all posters and other wall hangings and check that no damage has been caused to the walls.
  • Clean and hang curtains properly.
  • Clean the inside of your windows, including sills.
  • Check your tenancy agreement to see if you are responsible for cleaning the outside of the windows.
  • Put any furniture provided back in its correct place in the property.
  • Empty all bins.
  • Remove all rubbish from the property.
  • If you have a garden/outside space, tidy this area, mow the lawn, cut back any overgrown shrubs.
