A month long campaign running Week 1 – 4 (Monday 14th Jan – Sunday 10th Feb)
Ever wanted to experiment with going veggie? Give it a try this January with #VeggiePledge – a campaign to encourage students to reduce their meat consumption.
We would love to see pledges of vegetarianism and veganism across Reading however this campaign is about making a change, big or small. This could be to cut out meat entirely for this month’s campaign or to just substitute one of your meaty meals to vegetarian each week!
Who Leads on this Campaign
Your Activities Officer, Ali Perry
Why Get Involved?
Cost – We understand the daily struggle of making that student loan stretch… So why not try this campaign to help reduce your food bills. Supplementing meat can massively reduce the overall cost of your meal.
Health – This campaign encourages less meat consumption and more veggiessssss! How can that not have benefits? An increased intake in fruit and vegetable is a better diet, helping you to consume all the necessary vitamins your body needs. We understand protein is still important so make sure your diet is still balanced (we can help you with this from our daily recipe release).
Environment – Going vegan is the ‘single biggest way’ we can reduce our environmental impact, according Oxford University researchers. This is because eating a plant-based diet can cut our greenhouse gas emissions, reduce pollution and water usage, prevent deforestation and save wild animals from extinction.
Animals – Let’s face it, animals do suffer. Reducing meat and animal consumption is being kind. And isn’t that the kind of world we want?
This runs conveniently at a similar time as the national campaign ‘Veganuary’. It’s a great challenge to get involved with as a new year’s resolution to kickstart your year!
Dates: Thursday 17th January
Venue: Down by Mojos!
About: An activity to engage students and get them thinking on how they can pledge to reduce their meat consumption! We’ll have little pledge cards to write on that can be displayed in RUSU.
Pledge, Quiz and TASTE
Date: Friday 25th January
About: This is a really exciting (free!) event. We are providing stalls with different vegetarian and vegan food for you guys to try and see just how yummy meatless food can actually be! Not only that we’re there to tell you a bit about why we’re doing this and answer any questions. There will also be the opportunity to make a pledge on our little pledge cards that will be displayed around RUSU. Additionally, there will be a little quiz (fill out a multiple-choice sheet of questions), making you think about why we’re running the campaign. Obviously, there will be a PRIZE – come along on Friday to find out what you could win!
Online Pledges – Instagram
If you miss the pledge events do not fear. Please get involved on social media by taking pictures of pledges, veggie meals you’ve cooked and how you’re contributing to the campaign! We want as many pics as possible (please bombard us). Just make sure you upload by tagging @rusuphotos on your picture. We’ll then collate these and post some amazing collages on all you guys have achieved!
Fruit and Veg RUSU Market Discounts

We’re collaborating with the Thursday fruit and vegetable market to provide some deals and discounts for you to get some veggies into your diet!
