Working at Little Learners Nursery

RUSU provides up to 106 places in our purpose built Little Learners Day Nursery on the Whiteknights Campus. We are looking for the following highly motivated and energetic staff to work flexibly as part of a friendly team that prides itself on providing exceptional standards of childcare. The ideal candidates will have a good understanding of how children learn through play and will have planned for children’s learning using the Early Years Foundation Stage in partnership with the children’s parents. A sound knowledge of safeguarding and health and safety is also essential.

Nursery Cook

£15,288 - £17,129 per annum (pro rata for part time) 

We are looking for a nursery cook to join our friendly nursery, based in our purpose built nursery on the University of Reading campus.

You will need to be passionate about providing healthy and nutritious meals for children aged 3 months to 5 years with a focus on cooking from fresh.

The ideal candidate must have previous experience, not necessarily within a nursery environment as we will consider candidates who have provided meals to the elderly, hospitals or schools.  You will also have good communication skills.

Responsibilities will include:

  • To prepare and serve nutritious and varied meals for children, wash up and clean kitchen as required.
  • To manage the kitchen food ordering and work within set budgets.
  • To follow and implement all policies and procedures set out by the nursery including all environmental and health and safety procedures.
  • To work as a reliable member of the nursery team.


You will also need to have the following qualifications/training/experience:

  • The basic food hygiene certificate (Level 2) is essential. Level 3 is desirable but training will be given.
  • Previous experience of working in a kitchen.
  • Experience preparing and cooking a large quantity of meals.
  • An organised approach, flexible attitude and ability to use own initiatve
  • An understanding of food allergies.

We currently have vacancies for Childcare Apprentices to train towards achieving intermediate and advance Children and Young People’s Workforce qualification or equivalent.

Front End Developer

£22,245 to £27,081 per annum (pro-rate for full-time; 35 hours per week)

Reading University Students’ Union require a Front End Developer to develop, design and maintain our website ensuring that the site is accurate, up to date and relevant to the needs of the diverse membership.

The Developer will be responsible for creating functional and appealing web and mobile based applications based on high standards of usability and accessibility. You will be expected to maintain an awareness of industry issues and trends, particularly in regard to accessibility, usability and emerging issues. Your role will be to maintain graphic standards and branding throughout the website.

You will develop, plan and undertake concurrent web design projects to maintain a professional, attractive and accessible website for all users and contribute to its continuous development. You will equally be required to liaise with content generators and other stakeholders within RUSU.

To ensure that RUSU effectively promotes itself and the services offered to its members you should have the experience of the following:

  • Working across digital channels including search, social media, digital marketing, website and mobile
  • Web development software CSS3, HTML5
  • Bootstrap
  • PHP
  • Graphic design software
  • Managing multiple projects whilst meeting deadlines
