A MESSAGE FROM YOUR FULL-TIME OFFICERS ON RETURNING TO CAMPUS SAFELY

Dear incoming and current students,

Here at Reading University Students’ Union, we are so excited to welcome you back to campus! We know it's been a long time — since the end of the last academic year was cut short — and we have missed having students on campus. However, we want to give you a message that even though we want you to have a great first term, we all have a part to play to stay safe and protect each other and our community.

Please do know that it is really important that you remember to enrol on RISIS and read all documents regarding COVID-19 safety that the University gives you and follow them closely. We need to work together this year to follow the government's guidance, from maintaining social distancing to self-isolating when instructed to, this way we can protect the people and community we love.

We understand the frustration of not being able to socialise in the way we are used to. However, we have worked hard during the summer to come up with inventive ways for you to enjoy the experience of your first term at Reading. RUSU has transformed our venues into ‘The Big RUSU Pub’, with an array of different themes including pizza nights, film nights and the well-loved Quiz & Karaoke. This will be COVID safe, so please ensure to book a table for your household, follow our one-way system, and use the Round app to get table service. You can find out more about our upcoming events on our website.

Here at RUSU, we host over 100 different societies, including Hobbies & Interests, Culture & Faith, and Academic & Career. We have asked all societies to host a range of virtual student activity events to get involved with this term, to ensure all students can engage with others on campus whilst maintaining a safe environment.

Subject to government guidance, many RUSU-led sports will be running in September again. In addition, we plan on running our Volunteering & Sustainability, Sports & Dance, and Society & Media fayres in October, so you won’t miss an opportunity to get involved. If you wish to contact individual sports or societies, please contact them via email. You can see the list of activities you can get involved with on our website.

We think it's more important than ever that we stay connected this term. As your Student Officers, we want you to know that if you have any concerns or feedback then you can contact us via email, our Facebook pages or through Instagram. We know this Freshers is going to be different, but we really hope you have a great start to the year. We loved our time at Reading, and we know you will too.

Finally, we wanted to add that we understand the temptation to meet up and have gatherings with more than six people in one household. Please know that house parties are illegal and those hosting can potentially face a fine of up to £10,000. We trust that members of our student body will make the safest decisions to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 within our community.
