    Campaign for changes to laundry system

      The problem I want to Change is:

      In halls, as many may be experiencing or remember from first year, the laundry is contacted out to Washstation. When you top up your card you are only allowed to enter mutiples of £5. Losing you money

       

      This is a problem for students because:

      Money loaded on to cards is non-refundable(as the cards state) and is loaded on in multiples of £5 while a hot wash and dry costs £4.20. This means (Particularly, last year due to COVID-19) extra money goes to Washstation.

       

      To change this, I think RUSU should:

      Campaign to Washstation to change the card loading system, as St Andrews university union are. Or change it to pay with contactless debit card. Could the university, the union or UPP run them, instead, for less profit? With refunds at end of contract

       

      This will help students because:

      Students washing will be cheaper and easier, without losing money at the end of each year in halls.

    2:32pm on 23 Mar 21 The following idea went to IFG: Title RUSU to lobby the university for a new laundry system in halls The problem I want to Change is: Students living in halls only being able to upload money to a Washstation card in multiples of £5.00. This is a problem for students because: Students are losing out financially because the minimum amount they can upload to a Washstation card does not align with the price of a wash/dry cycle. Also, any money that is not used is not currently refunded to the student at the end of their residence in halls. To change this, I think RUSU should: Lobby the University to make changes to the amount that can be uploaded to the Washstation card and for the amount left on the card at the end of the student’s residence in halls be refunded to the student. If this is not possible with the current contractors, RUSU to lobby the University to change contractors and select a new laundry contractor that does not operate in this way. This will help students because: Students will be able to upload any amount onto the card and any monies left on the Washstation card will be refunded to the student. This will prevent students losing money to laundry contractors therefore improving students’ financial situation. The idea went to Student Voice as a campaign for the following reasons: CAMPAIGN Welfare Officer investigated if the University contract with Washstation is being changed. Welfare Officer contacted University and UPP and learned that there is a contract in place with Washstation. Response from the University is that they plan to review contracts at some point in the future but no specific plans are in place yet. This idea cannot be achieved by RUSU alone so would require campaigning activity.
