Faith is a small charity here in Reading where they have been running for over 25 years. They are best known for the Soup Kitchen that is run by volunteers in the Reading Minster Church on weekday evenings. The group is always looking for new volunteers of religious and non-religious backgrounds.
In particular, we are looking to invite students to volunteer on either a Wednesday evening (19:30-21:30) or Friday evening (19:00-21:00) and ask for students to commit to volunteering once a month at the minimum.
Duties typically include: setting up (putting out tables, filling hot water urns, laying out food collected from Pret A Manger etc.); serving teas/coffees/food; having conversations with guests; packing up (wiping down tables, moping floor, packing away equipment etc.); leading a prayer if you would like to!
This volunteering opportunity will suit you if: you have an interest in helping Reading's homeless and struggling community; you have a friendly and non-judgemental disposition; you are looking for a flexible volunteering opportunity (the group asks for you to attend whenever you can but does not demand attendance when you have exams, coursework deadlines, your best friend's birthday or a trip home for the weekend!).
You will gain: new friends; eye-opening experiences; confidence in a new social environment; volunteering for you CV and towards the RED Award; a warm glow because you're such a good egg.
Upcoming events: Soup Kitchen runs weekly so we have no official "first event" that we expect student volunteers to attend, i.e. we're flexible on when you start volunteering with us, but please drop us an email to let us know if we should expect you to be attending.
