Reading University Men’s Rugby Union Football Club (RURFC) is run by students and consists of four competitive teams playing on Wednesday afternoons during the autumn and spring terms. The social nature of the club means that everyone from the RURFC President to a 4th XV substitute gets on well, and with regular socials, joining RURFC is a good way to combine competitive sport with a great social life.
The 1st and 2nd teams compete in high level competitve matches, with away fixtures agaisnt some of the best universities in the South East and South West. The 1st XV have been promoted to South B, whilst the 2nd XV play in South Eastern 2A.
The 2017-18 season was a huge success and offers plenty of scope for progression this year. The 1st XV went on an unbeaten league campaign and reached the BUCS Trophy final. Unfortunately, they lost narrowly in the final against a stong Sheffield 1st XV side. Both teams want to keep developing and progressing through the leagues to play at the best standard possible.
RURFC’s 3rd and 4th XV are key components in the club. Not only are they being promoted through the leagues on a yearly basis, they provide the bulk of the club and are a great means of either introducing boys to the sport or providing the chance for experienced players to get a run out if they are tied up with academic work. Successful representation while playing for the 3rd or 4th XV is a good way to be noticed by RURFC captains who may recommend you for selection in a higher team.
The club also have close ties with Readingensians Rams Rugby Club and many boys get the chance to trial for Berkshire Rugby at both U20 and Men’s level. Additionally, this year members of the club represented the South-West of England u20s and England U20s Counties.
Freshers with a keen interest in rugby union are actively encouraged to join the club. We are one of the largest clubs in the University, with around 140 boys signed up to RURFC. We have a stand at the Freshers Fair during Freshers’ Week so please come over and have a chat with the committee members if you want to join and trials will be in Freshers week so entry into the club can be as swift as possible.
