Hello 2020 Freshers and Returners and welcome to Reading University Music Society!
Congratulations to those who have made it into Reading University or are successfully returning for another year!
We offer a diverse range of musical ensembles and welcome students of all standards and abilities, having weekly rehearsals leading up to fun and informal termly concerts.
Friendly and fun, the society is a great way to meet like-minded people and have the chance to play music every week, as well as relax and enjoy yourself.
We have a variety of socials, from meals out to West End shows, plus trips to the pub after every rehearsal!
If you’re looking to have some fun and get involved with music, don’t hesitate to get in touch and come to our taster sessions, we can’t wait to meet you!

The society will be holding taster sessions for all ensembles. These are FREE and it would be lovely to see you there. All the rehearsals will take place at L29 on London Road campus. There will be walking buses from Palmer Building on Whiteknights campus if you are unsure of where to go. There will also be committee members scattered about to help if you are lost! Keep updated with our social media to see when they’ll be, or come and see us at the freshers fayre!

Ensemble Leader: Laura McIlroy
RUMS Flute Choir is a group of flautists who meet to play music from films, musicals, and classical pieces. Recent pieces include Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’ and ‘Never Enough’ from The Greatest Showman. Join us on Wednesdays 7:30-8:30pm(*)
Ensemble Leader: Erin Redmond
RUMS Clarinet Choir is a group of clarinet players who meet Tuesdays at 6:30-7:30pm. (*). We play all types of music and recently we have performed a medley from Lord of the Rings, Queen’s ‘Somebody to Love’ and ‘The Polar Express’.
Ensemble Leaders: Louise Gerth and Laura McIlory
RUMS Choir is a friendly choir open to all abilities, singing a range of music such as pop music and songs from musicals. Recent songs include ‘I’ll stand by You’ and ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana. Join us on Wednesday 6:30-7:30pm (*) for what is promised to be a relaxed and enjoyable environment!
Ensemble Leaders: Max Gamblen and Tom Cox
RUMS Jazz Band is a welcoming group for musicians of all abilities! We play a wide variety of Jazz, including standards, funk and more, and we’re always open to suggestions! Our rehearsals are always relaxed and enjoyable, and we also like to encourage people to challenge themselves with Jazz skills such as improvisation. We hope to see you at our rehearsals from 6:30-7:30pm on Wednesdays! (*)
Ensemble Leader: Joe Freestone
RUMS Saxophone group are a friendly group of musicians who rehearse every Wednesday 7:30-8:30pm. (*) We play a mix of music from Bach to Britney Spears and are open to any ability. Any size of sax welcome!
Ensemble Leaders: Phoebe Honey and MC Benoist
RUMS String Ensemble is a group of string players of mixed ability, who play a variety of music from classical to all the well-known favourites from musicals and films. We meet on a Tuesday evening 6:30-7:30pm. (*) So come along and try it out, it would be great to see some new faces!
Ensemble Leader: Lloyd Dafydd
RUMS Brass Band is a group of friendly brass players who play music both for small brass ensembles and also classic brass banding music. We’re friendly and accepting of people from all brass instruments and abilities and there’s room for everyone. We rehearse from 7:30-8:15pm on a Wednesday (*) and are always welcoming new members!
Ensemble Leaders: Ben Stone, James Smith and Laura Braithwaite
RUMS Concert Band offers a great environment to meet other student musicians and play fun concert band music from film themes to (the dreaded) Tequila. We welcome all abilities and a wide range of instruments. If that’s not enough to get you to come along we also have a cake break in the middle of rehearsals and, much like the other ensembles, make sure to spend time to socialise after we finish practising. We rehearse Tuesday 7:30-8:30pm. (*)
Ensemble Leaders: Lloyd Dafydd and Ben Stone
Concert Orchestra is a chance for String Ensemble and Concert Band to come together and play some orchestral pieces. We merge the end of Strings and the start of Concert Band for a 30 minute rehearsal of the music, in the friendly and welcoming RUMS environment. We’d love to see you come and join us!
