Welcome to the Gaming & Esports Society
The Gaming and Esports Society caters to all varieties gamers here at Reading. Whether you play on PC or console, competitively or casually, online or on LAN, our Society is dedicated to improving your gaming experience while at University.
Our society runs regular meetings, socials and competitions, as well as organising visits to (or viewing parties for) various Gaming events. We also meet up more informally at places such as Park Bar and The Dairy (which is a pub on the London Road Campus). This coming year we may become a little more adventurous with these meet-ups, so make sure to join our discord and follow us on social media so you don't miss out!
While barely a week goes by where our Society doesn't arrange some kind of Real Life Event, we don't force people to be sociable - we have a very active online community as well. Our discord server functions as an hub for all gaming activity at the University. If you're looking for people to play with, all you need to do is type a message in the general chat and the chances are good that you will find other students with the same interests as you.
In addition to all of the above, our Society's other core function is in forming teams to represent Reading in inter-University Esports competitions:
The UK University Esports scene is much better developed than many people realise, and it is growing at a remarkable rate (40% per year currently). In 2018-19 there were 800 teams playing in competitions run by National Student Esports (NSE), which is as many as there were across the entirety of British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).
There are currently well-established University Leagues for: Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Rocket League, Dota 2, Hearthstone, Overwatch, Rainbow 6: Siege, PUBG, Tekken, Super Smash Bros, Magic the Gathering and FIFA - as well as smaller tournaments for plenty of other games.
You don't need to be an amazing player to enter these events - while things can get quite competitive at the top level, the vast majority of teams are just playing for fun and there are a wide range of ranks represented. We intend to field plenty of teams, and will try to match people up with team-mates at a similar level of talent/dedication, so playing for Reading should be an enjoyable experience regardless of your skill level.
All of our competitive teams are managed through our discord server, so if you would like to be on a team, make sure to join the server and put your name down on the roster sheet (which can be found in the #rosters channel).
We also have our own jerseys that can be bought at https://raven.gg/nse/reading

Results from 2018/2019 Season Winter and Spring
Every team that competes for Reading earns us points towards the British University Esports Championship (BUEC) - which is an overall table on which all University Esports Societies are ranked. In the 2018-19 academic year, Reading finished 19th out of more than 100 Universities in the UK - this is an achievement we are very proud of given it was our first year competing as a Society, and every single University that finished above us was operating on a substantially larger budget than ours. This coming year, with increased resources and plenty of new players coming in, we have high hopes of pushing our way up the BUEC table and making our mark on the University Esports scene.
We are incredibly proud to announce that our Rocket League team managed to finish 2nd in the European University Rocketeers Summer Season 2019, an event open to more than 200 University teams from across the continent.
