The Rock Soc is a social society with a vibrant membership both on campus and in town. Our members enjoy a wide range of alternative music, including classic rock, metal, goth, punk, industrial/EBM, grunge, pop punk, indie and lots more. We host a range of socials throughout the year such as different alternative nights in town, live music, day trips and overnight stays! Venues include Purple Turtle, Sub89, Facebar, and many more. This year, we are aiming to host more non-drinking socials like movie nights, welfare events, picnics in the summer and more, but we are very well known for our Freshers events, trips to London, Pub Crawls and Halloween/Christmas special events.
We are hoping that there will be events for everyone to enjoy, and we welcome suggestions from members that they would like to see happening on the university calendar. The new committee for academic year 2021/22 are hoping organise more trips away from Reading such as our famed overnight stay in Camden which has been running for three years.
Our committee this year are a great bunch of people, who are delighted to be running the society. We want to see lots of new freshers this coming academic year, and your first chance to meet us will be at the Freshers Fayre, so come say hi at our stall and find out more about our events for this year, where we will be handing out flyers and stickers.
Join our 2021/22 Facebook group and follow our Instagram to keep up to date on all the latest events from the society and around Reading, or chat to any of our committee members if you want to know anything more!
A glimpse into what's to come!
LIVE MUSIC NIGHTS: There are many live music nights around town and campus throughout the year which we attend, including Perk (Facebar and Oakford Social Club), Encore (Hosted by Band Soc on campus), BBC Introducing (Purple Turtle, every Wednesday) and other nights organized by promotors in Reading town. Join our Facebook group for more information.
WELFARE EVENTS: This year we want to introduce more welfare-related events that will be run by our welfare rep, Pinar. We will host events where we can all can discuss welfare topics like mental health, LGBT+, drug/alcohol culture, relationships and more.
MOVIE NIGHTS: The society would love to host more movie nights online and in person to foster our community atmosphere. There are many venues in which we can hold these, including the Palmer Building and the Ice House at Wessex halls. We will post a poll for people to pick which movie they would like to watch; people can bring snacks and buy drinks at the bar, who are well-known for their brilliant cocktail menu.
CHRISTMAS/ HOLIDAY EVENTS: Details of our Christmas/end of term events will be released closer to the time, get your ugliest Christmas sweater on!
REGULAR SOCIALS: Our tried and true night out is Skint Mondays at The Purple Turtle, recently evolving into Skint Thursdays at Lola Lo's. Keep an eye out on our socials for more information regarding specific themed nights out. We will be actively leading groups to these during the first couple of weeks of term, but you can always be sure to see a friendly face on one of these nights. More details can be found on our Facebook and Instagram.
CAMDEN TRIP: Rock Soc have organized a trip to Camden, London, for the past three years, and we want to carry on this fantastic tradition! This will be held sometime at the beginning of their new year (restrictions depending), where we drive to London, stay one night in a hostel, and spend the day enjoying the Camden stalls, markets and venues.
