Coaches

Chris Gittens: Head of Ladies Hockey

I started coaching in 2009 at Trojans, whilst at University studying a BSc Sports Coaching Science degree. When I finished university in 2011, I returned to Trojans as Director of Coaching and Mens 1st XI player-coach. Two years later I took over the Ladies 1st XI Head Coach role, working with the 1st XI squad for three years in the Investec National League West Conference. I was also responsible for the colts section as a whole and worked with everyone from the U8s through to the U18s. In the summer of 2016, I moved from Trojans to join Surbiton HC as Head of the U16/U18 girls and Ladies 2nd XI Head Coach. Over the past two years I have taken on an expanded role working with all the colts age groups as well as in local schools and universities. I also took on becoming the Ladies 1st XI Assistant Coach and 1st XI Indoor Head Coach, and have been extremely fortunate to be able to work with some very talented top players in some top competitions. The highlight so far has to be the European Club Cup of 2018 and 2019!I

Josh Bretherton: Head of Mens Hockey

We also have a new Men’s Head Coach coming over from the ladies, Josh Bretherton.  He was in Victorian U21s - 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, Australian U21s Johor Cup Team - 2014, 2015 , Australian U21s Oceania Cup (GOLD) - 2016 and Victorian Vikings (GOLD) - 2017. Josh is returning for a second stint in England playing for Reading. He hopes to push all the men’s team for promotion and back to where they rightfully should be.

Rob Farrow: Director of Hockey

Rob carries on his second year as director of hockey. He has close links to local schools and Reading Hockey Club also. He has high aspirations for the club as well as the committee, and this is reflected with the new coaches which have been appointed.

Chris Wyver: Head Of Goalkeeping

Chris is a member of the university where he is currently starting his PHD in insects. He has been a member of the GB squad for many years representing the under 21 numerous times. He also had caps
for England indoor. You can frequently see Chris wearing one of his rogue football tops. Chris is looking forward to developing our long list of goalies this year, and given them specific training.

Welfare

We have a strong welfare team in place within the society, with both trained Male and Female Welfare officers - Katie Crace and Will Hosford - as well as the rest of a committee. As a whole Sports club, we recognise the importance to look out for one another, and it is a key element of our club ethos to provide a welcoming environment to all.

Socials

As a club we are lucky enough to have four elected social secretaries from Second Year. Their role is to organise inclusive socials, from meals to fancy dress. We know that they have plenty of exciting events in mind.

RUHC Social Secretaries 2019/2020: Rachel Ekstein-Holden, Kirsty Robinson, Tom Mancais and Tom Woodfield.

Wednesday's

As a BUCS club, every Wednesday is the highlight of our week. With BUCS games starting at 12pm, we support all of our teams in their games before meeting at Campus' Park Bar and heading to Wednesday Union to celebrate a day of sport.

Tour

Each year, a group from RUHC travel with ILOVETOUR, most recently to Croatia for a fun-filled trip, playing hockey and socialising with other universities. Its a great opportunity to meet new people and make the most of the sun before exams!
