We have a strong committee this year who all have different levels of experience with sailing and windsurfing:

Commodore - Michaela Attfield
Vice Commodore - Sophie Child
Treasurer - Mya Peterson
Social Sec - Abbey Smith and Charlotte Hemsley
Race Captain - Charlotte Gordon

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to message one of us on facebook!

Last year we took part in sailing competitions all over the uk, such as: Cardiff University; Loughborough University; Brunel University and more! These weekends involved 2 days of competitive racing and fun socials with other university sailing teams.

Every summer, we also take part in Summer Sail Week. Last year we took 23 of our members around the stunning islands of Croatia in 3 yachts. This event involves a week of sailing and sunbathing in the day followed by clubbing and partying at night! We have a video of the SSW experience:

Our socials have been an integral part of the club this year. It allows members to really get to know each other. Whether it’s a trip to Park Bar after sailing on Wednesday for a pint or our infamous nights out on Saturday in Union they are not to be missed!
This year we will also be doing a number of non-drinking socials such as movie nights and game nights to keep things more chilled.

Even if you don’t want to become the next Ben Ainslie but still want to come along to socials throughout the year we have a social membership available!

Also, if you want to find out more about our club and what we have been up to this year please follow us on

For anyone interested in power boat qualifications and yachting please contact us! Dependent on interest we might be able to arrange trips for these.

Where we sail:

We sail at Burghfield Sailing Club (BSC), on a lake that is just over 200 acres. It is located next to the M4 motorway a few miles west of Reading.

What we sail:

At Burghfield we have 8 Fireflys. These are the standard boats that Universities sail because they are the boat used for team racing. Additionally we own a variety of windsurfing kit with rigs for all abilities. We also have access a wide variety of other boats that BSC own.

If you have your own boat and would like to bring it with you then please contact us and we can help arrange that with BSC.

Learning to sail:

Many of our members are qualified RYA instructors. This means if you’re new to sailing and want to learn, there’s always someone who can help you.

Learning to windsurf:

We have a qualified Windsurf instructor who will be available at wednesday sailing sessions throughout the year if you would like to try it out! If you are interested, message us on facebook and we can give you more details.

Last year we travelled all over the country to team race against other universities (Nottingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Brunel, Imperial and Swansea are just some of the places we have raced) Although the majority of our members like to just sail for fun, others want to become competitive and race! In 2017/18 our first team also qualified for BUSA/BUCS playoffs which was a big achievement, although these were unfortunately cancelled due to the snow.

We host our own team-racing event called The Reading Rumble. This is hosted on a weekend in late October. At this event up to 20 teams from other universities converge on Reading for a weekend of racing and socials, which makes for a great weekend!

If you don’t fancy team racing, we also regularly join in with local fleet racing at BSC. These events have a wide range of boats entered and race on a handicap system depending on boat class.

On Shore:

At RUSC we are most certainly not always on the water, in the meantime we hold frequent socials to champion those of other clubs! For example, over 150 sailors attended our Reading Rumble social last year!

As you may understand traditional socials aren't able to take place due to covid-19, however we are dedicated to connecting our members with virtual socials

Want to come and sail?

If you would like to come and join us please email for more information.

You can also keep up to date with what we are up to on facebook, like our Facebook page!

Our upcoming events can be found on this calendar.

Standard membership – This membership entitles you to come and sail every Wednesday (space permitting) and any other social sessions we run. As well as this you can join us on all of our socials (tickets for socials not included in this price). It also allows you to join our yearly tour.

Racing add-on – This is an add on to the sailing membership which allows you to race at any event(s) you are picked to compete at. This is to cover some of the costs which allow us to attend races. This is only needs to be purchased when advised to by a member of the committee.

Social membership – This is for anyone who is not a 'sailor' but simply a lover of the social of the club. This is to cover some of our social costs if you are the type who attends every social without fail! This membership is exempt from our sports insurance as it does not entitle you to sail.

Note – As with all sports in order to become a member you must also purchase the sports insurance (you will be asked to when purchasing membership if you require it). If you already hold insurance for another sport, then this covers you and so you will not be asked to purchase this again on checkout.

The sailing kit worn varies depending on the time of year, however we require you to wear a buoyancy aid at all times when on jetties or the water. In the winter months (December – March) we require you also to wear a wetsuit or drysuit and plenty of warm clothing. The club does have a small amount of kit that we are able to lend to you to sail in, however if you do have your own wetsuit or buoyancy aid please bring it with you when you come to sail.

Members are welcome to put in an order for Sailing Club kit (or as most call it ‘stash’). We put in a large order during the first term and it is often possible to put further orders in throughout the year so just ask! We are a Knights affiliated club however due to the nature of sailing we require specialised kit. We are proud to be in partnership with Helly Hansen who supply us with the kit we require. This means we are able to get extremely good quality kit and clothing at great prices!

The Green Blue University Sailing Sustainability Challenge:

We are proud to announce that we have joined The Green Blue University Sailing Sustainability Challenge.
The Green Blue is a joint initiative between The RYA and British Marine working towards more sustainable sailing. Over the past year we took part and by completing criteria to make our club kinder to the environment, whilst becoming more sustainable for the future of our great sport!
