Who are we?
Reading Lions Club is a local group of volunteering men and women who are passionate about making a positive difference to our community. As members of Reading Lions Club we pay a subscription which ensures that every penny raised is used to enhance people’s lives. Non-political and non-religious we are part of a 1.4 million strong charity organisation spanning over 200 countries worldwide. We are a friendly, sociable group and have FUN doing what we do!
Our International arm has promoted and run health projects treating millions of people worldwide for over 100 years and is often amongst the first on the scene of natural disasters. We have saved or enabled the sight of millions with our surgical and glasses collection programs and assist the medical services with our home ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme.
What do we do?
Through events during the year including our huge Fireworks Spectacular and December Santa Sleigh Tour we have raised well over £250,000 in the last 10 years. The majority of which was used locally to support individuals, families and community groups helping improve the quality of life for young, old and disadvantaged alike. We carefully investigate every request for assistance ensuring that all our funds are well spent.
Are Lions relevant to my age group?
Yes, definitely. Lions operate youth exchange groups and camps and have membership of all ages. Currently we feel a more ‘informal’ relationship is suited to students who already have many responsibilities at this time. But we are hoping to develop this further in the future. If a group of committed students wanted to form a dedicated group to support Reading Lions Club or potentially set up their own ‘Campus Lions Club’ this would be welcomed.
How can you help?
Let’s face it, your education and social life means full membership would be difficult (although our Leo membership starts at an early age). We do however value our friends. ‘Friends of Reading Lions’ are those who can donate an hour or so on a regular basis or only once a year at events such as Fireworks, Dragon Boat Festival, Santa Sleigh, a Christmas lunch for local pensioners or a tidy up at a canal side lock. Simply register your details via Reading Lions Club’s website https://www.readinglions.org.uk/_contact.html you will get an email when volunteers are needed and simply respond if the event works for you.
You will be amazed what impact a couple of hours can have on the community around you and the fun and feeling of wellbeing it derives for you. We are happy to provide a testimonial if this assists with coursework and future employment opportunities. Community volunteering is now considered a positive attribute for a potential employee.
