Marrow is the student branch of Anthony Nolan – a charity running the stem cell register used to find donors to provide transplants for patients with blood cancer! This treatment is often the last resort for the patient.
At Reading Marrow, we run donor recruitment events on campus to recruit students to the register. It’s really simple – we help you fill out a form, understand the two methods of donation and ensure that you are happy with that (we don’t pressure anyone to sign up as that’s not in anyone’s interest), explain how you take the cheek swab...then pop it all in an envelope and send to Anthony Nolan! It really is as easy as that to join the register and increase the chances of a patient to find a match. If you are interested in finding out more, please visit www.anthonynolan.org or contact us on our Facebook page.
We need volunteers to join our society to help out at donor recruitment events and at fundraisers (including doughnut union sales!). You can get involved as much or as little as you wish, and we cost nothing to join. We count towards the RED Award but volunteering for longer with us will improve your communication, public speaking and interpersonal skills – brilliant experience for your CV and LinkedIn. We are always on the lookout for next year’s committee members too.
We hold regular socials throughout the term for everyone to get to know each other and have a break from studies…being a lifesaver can be good fun too!
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
