Welcome to the Museums Partnership Reading Volunteering Society!

Museums Partnership Reading is a four year partnership between two fantastic museums!

The Museum of English Rural Life at the University of Reading uses its diverse collections to explore how the skills and experiences of rural people, past and present, help shape our lives.

Reading Museum’s collections tell the story of Reading and its place in the world. Local Victorian collector Horatio Bland left the town his private museum of fascinating objects from Ancient Greek pots to a duck-billed platypus! Today we have almost 500,000 accessioned objects of archaeology, art, natural history, social history and world cultures.

Put simply, people who volunteer are very important to us. We enjoy working with volunteers and have done so for many years. Our volunteers carry out a wide range of interesting roles to make our collections and stories more accessible. Volunteers welcome visitors in front of house roles, including object handling sessions with visitors. Others work behind the scenes, such as cataloguing archive materials and digitising our collections.

People volunteer with us for a number of reasons. Some do it to gain experience for a job in museums, while others simply want the chance to explore their hobby or interest in history. Whatever the reason, volunteers make a huge contribution towards our work and enable more people to use and enjoy our collections.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and ages and we aim to reflect the diverse community of Reading. While many are students, we also have many retirees, those out of employment and everyone in between. If you join us here at the Museum, you will be sure of making new friends and broadening your horizons!

We are delighted that MPR achieved the 2019 Investing in Volunteers accreditation, the UK quality standard for good practice in volunteer management. Achieving this accreditation demonstrates our commitment to volunteering and effective volunteer management, and shows how much we value and support our volunteers.

If volunteering for the museums in Reading sounds like something you'd be passionate about, then maybe think about joining our Museums Partnership Reading Volunteering Society, where you can truly get hands-on with helping our volunteers get the most out of their time with us!

You can hear more from current volunteer Annie, who is our Social Media and Marketing Rep:

Hi! My name is Annie and I am currently the costumed interpreter for Jane Austen as well as an archaeology student at the University of Reading. Whilst meaning I can make a lot of pre-hysterical jokes; it also meant that joining the MPR Volunteering Society made sense. Through it I have gained new friends who share similar interests to me.

We are a group of students who have been volunteering in museums and are looking to help new student volunteers who are interested in joining in with our events and socials to create a community atmosphere. We hope that this will make this jump into museums more

manageable and will give the opportunity to talk through the technicalities of balancing university work and volunteering. Through this we can all have archaic and eat it!

We hope you are interested in joining us in the MPR Volunteering Society, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
