Sport in Mind ® is an independent multi-award winning mental health charity (unaffiliated to Mind and not part of the local Mind network) that was formed in Reading, Berkshire in 2010 with a simple mission:

"To improve the lives of people experiencing mental health problems through sport and physical activity"

We are the UK’s leading mental health sports charity and deliver physical activity (sport, walking, dance and movement, gardening and exercise sessions) projects in partnership with the amazing NHS in order to aid recovery, promote mental wellbeing, improve physical health, combat social isolation and empower people to move their lives forward in a positive direction.

At the sessions, volunteers have a variety of jobs. Sometimes they will need to assist in setting up and clearing up equipment. The main role of the volunteers is to participate in the sessions, so service users have someone to play the sports with, however sometimes the service users just fancy a chat whilst observing the session. The sessions are relaxed and can differ week by week, depending on the needs of the service users.

If you would like to volunteer at the sessions, please email Calum at to arrange taster sessions and any necessary checks.

What people say:

Before I started playing tennis with Sport in Mind I was a total beginner, I was also very inactive because of my anxiety disorder. But now I have more confidence and a wonderful group of friends. I am also eating better and have begun to lose a lot of weight. The coaches are very considerate of my mental health needs and are supportive. Tennis has helped me cope as I came off my antidepressants and I have developed a sustainable lifestyle because of it.”  University of Reading Student
